Take Flight Training

Certified Dyslexia Therapy Training Program

REGISTRATION OPEN NOW FOR TRAINING STARTING JULY 2025
This is a two-year training course to become a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) through ALTA. Training begins July 21-25, 2025 in-person in beautiful Monument, Colorado (online options are also available). Training days throughout the school year will occur approximately once a month and will be held online only. You will learn strategies for teaching students with dyslexia through the curriculum,Take Flight: A Comprehensive Intervention for Students with Dyslexia

Participants of CDTTP will learn

  • history, definition and characteristics of dyslexia
  • acquire a deep knowledge of the structure of the English language
Through lectures, assigned reading, homework, quizzes, exams and a supervised practicum, trainees will be equipped to provide diagnostic, prescriptive, explicit, and systematic instruction for struggling readers. This acquired depth of knowledge in both the science and the pedagogy of reading will prepare teachers to be highly effective in a variety of teaching situations including reading instruction in the classroom, Tier II and III small group intervention in a school, or one-on-one in a private therapy setting.

Course Requirements

Bachelor’s degree (does not need to be in the field of education)
  • Participants who successfully complete the first year of training can take the Competency Exam-Practitioner Level to become a Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP).
  • Participants who successfully complete both the introductory and advanced years of training can take the ALTA Competency Exam-Therapy Level to become a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT).
A master’s degree is required to become a CALT; however, there is a five-year grace period to pursue a master’s degree if needed.
  • If you do not have a master’s degree and plan to pursue a master’s degree, you are still able to take both the Introductory Course and the Advanced Course years of the training to complete the entire Take Flight curriculum and use the complete Take Flight curriculum with students as a CALT-Candidate (CALT-C) while pursuing a master’s degree.
  • If you do not plan to pursue a master’s degree, you will also be able to take both the Introductory Course and the Advanced Course years of the training and be able to intervene with your students using the complete Take Flight curriculum as a CALP.
Two letters of reference Two-year training course (Introductory Course and Advanced Course) 200 hours (minimum) of direct instruction with a Qualified Instructor 700 hours (minimum) supervised clinical teaching hours with students 10 lesson demonstrations (minimum) with a score of 85% or above with documentation, self-critique, and instructor feedback Successful completion of required readings, summaries, assignments, quizzes and exams

Jet Training

Certified Dyslexia Practitioner Training Program

(Online Only)

This is a one-year training course to become a Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP) through ALTA.  Training begins July 28-August 1, 2025 in-person in beautiful Monument, Colorado (online options are also available). Three additional training days will occur throughout the school year and will be held online only. You will learn strategies for teaching students with dyslexia through the curriculum, Jet: A Fast-Paced Reading Intervention. Jet is designed for students in grades 9-adults.

Participants of CDPTP will learn

  • history, definition and characteristics of dyslexia
  • acquire a deep knowledge of the structure of the English language

Through lectures, assigned reading, homework, quizzes, exams and a supervised practicum, trainees will be equipped to provide diagnostic, prescriptive, explicit, and systematic instruction for struggling readers.

This acquired depth of knowledge in both the science and the pedagogy of reading will prepare teachers to be highly effective in a variety of teaching situations including reading instruction in the classroom, Tier II and III small group intervention in a school, or one-on-one in a private therapy setting.

45 hours (minimum) of direct instruction with a Qualified Instructor

60 hours (minimum) supervised clinical teaching hours with students

10 lesson demonstrations (minimum) with a score of 85% or above with documentation, self-critique, and instructor feedback

Successful completion of required readings, summaries, assignments, quizzes and exams

Participants who successfully complete the first year of training can take the Competency Exam-Practitioner Level to become a Certified Academic Language Practitioner (CALP).

Jet Training for CALTs

Trained in Take Flight

ONE DAY ONLY — dates TBD

If you are a CALT and you have already been trained in Take Flight, this one-day course will train you in how to use Jet: A Fast-Paced Reading Intervention for students 14 years of age and older. 

Requirements: You must be a Certified Academic Language Therapist in good standing with ALTA.
